El Salvador – Putting people first amidst the Coronavirus crisis

By Leah Borland: Imagine a country like El Salvador, has taken great measures to ensure the safety and welfare of its people. Now lets see…..

When this pandemic broke out, the first thing they did was close all thier borders, and immediately put measures in place to prevent price gouging ect.

They acted fast on a comprehensive public information campaign. Every person in every cornor of the country was kept informed.

They passed a law that all workers over the age of 60 go home with pay until further notice.

The President couldnt stop saying that the Health of his people was more important than the Economy. He repeatedly emphasized, “what good is the ecomony if we have no health?”

He later ordered all utility bills (water, light, phone, internet) suspended and has frozen all bank loans for the duration of the crisis.

Today, they are building a huge temporary Hospital that can hold up to 2000 + beds just for Covid-19 patients.

He warned that if anybody steals a cent out of monies allocated for this emergency he will “personally put them in jail”.

His philosophy has been, First my people, Second my people, Third my people…..

Politics is not dirty, dirty are those who come to power and forget their moral value, they steal from the public purse and dont care who ultimately suffers.

Covid19 is not even here yet (or so they say) and many people who work in the Tourism Sector, Princess, Radisson, Biltmore ect… are already getting laid off, days reduced, salary cuts….and we dont know until when this will go on!

As a people, we have lived too long with unhealthy practices, for lack of education, negligence, resources….whatever reason, 5 out of 10 of us have compromised immune systems. Many Belizeans will be perfect candidates for this CV-19, diebetics especially.

The impact this disease will have on our poor uneducated people & struggling economy is far worst than the disease itself.

Even a rough country like El Salvador has proven that when there is zero tolerance for coruption, things are different, we would be singing a different tune. Is it too late for us? I dont know. The PM says he will donate his whole salary …..wow.

Brace yourselves Belize, this isnt a joke, it will get worst before it gets better. I love my country so much but we need to Pray, Stay Safe, Improvise and Spend Wisely because we are in for a long haul. #PrayForBelize #thisTooShallPass #StayAtHome
