Government of Belize clarifies municipal curfew and entry ban notice

Posted: Sunday, March 22, 2020. 4:38 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Attorney General’s Ministry has stated via press release that contrary to announcements by the villages of Caye Caulker, Belize District, and Sarteneja, Corozal District, they have no authority to deny fellow Belizeans entry to their villages, nor to institute a mandatory curfew.

A public notice circulating, purportedly coming from the village council, states that only island residents will be allowed entry to the island of Caye Caulker as of Monday and that a curfew is implemented starting at 10 p.m.

Government’s release says that only it can restrict the movement of Belizeans within Belize by curfew or regulation.

Unless such restriction is enacted by the Government, the release says, municipal bodies should refrain from doing so on pain of legal action.

The Government continues to encourage social distancing as one of the best practices in avoiding the spread of COVID-19. Persons are encouraged to stay at home and avoid unnecessary social interactions.
