U.S. Chargé addresses American residents and Belizeans

Posted: Sunday, March 22, 2020. 5:43 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Charge’ d’affaires at the United States Embassy in Belize, Keith Gilges, today issued an update on the status of the Embassy and other notices.

While he has decided to stay in Belize and the Embassy remains open, services will be limited as employees are working from home and limiting meetings.

The Department of State is authorizing voluntary departure for diplomats and their families as necessary.

With the Philip Goldson International Airport closing on Monday, “the window is rapidly closing” for a return to the States, Gilges said, and if you stay, “be prepared to hunker down for an indefinite period of time.” Links to airline sites can be found at the Embassy website and Facebook page.

After reminding to “be smart” and to listen to the authorities, Gilges concludes, “With time and responsible behavior, things will return to normal, or perhaps a new normal. Whether we are Americans or Belizeans or both, we are partners, neighbours, friends and colleagues. We are one global community and we will get through this together.”
