By BBN Staff: The Belize Fisheries Department announced today that the fishery season for Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) will close at the end of the business day on Friday, March 27, 2020.

The department issues a statement this afternoon, saying that Minister of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, and Sustainable Development, will make the declaration in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 54 of 2012.

“This is necessary due to the realization of the Queen Conch production quota for the 2019-2020 fishing season,” the Ministry said. “The Belize Fisheries Department further advises restauranteurs and the public to use, consume and dispose of all Queen Conch meat in their possession on or before March 27th.”

The department warned that any person or establishment found in possession of the Queen Conch meat after March 27 will be charged and prosecuted in a court of law in accordance with the Fisheries Regulations.

The attention to all fisheries industry stakeholders, restaurants and the general public is called to this announcement.
