By BBN Staff: The Karl Husenser Memorial Hospital Announced today that, following the announcement of a positive case of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) detected in Belize, the hospital is now running in emergency mode.

The KHMH Authority issued a statement earlier saying that as of today it informs the public that all elective (on-essential) services have been postponed. Clinic days will also be shortened and the hospital will be issuing an abbreviated clinic schedule to be announced soon.

“Visitors with respiratory symptoms will not be allowed to visit patients. All persons entering the hospital will be scanned and triaged at nurse’s stations located at the KHMH Lobby and Accident and Emergency (A&E),” the KHMH said. “Visitors to the A&E Department will be
allowed only for minors and patients who require continuous assistance and who are in a critical state.”

The Nurse– in– charge of A&E will issue a pass for one visitor. This pass will not be interchangeable among family members. This family member will be responsible to pass on information received from the physician or nurse to other family members.

The hospital authority also announced changes to visitation at its general wards. Those changes include:
1. Visitors to the general wards of the hospital will be limited to one person only.

  1. The General Hospital Visiting hours will now be from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Sundays through Saturdays.
  2. If the patient is in critical condition, additional visitors will be allowed;

The hospital is also making a “Spokesperson Form” to allow for one family member to be named to visit patients, however, the decision to issue said forms will be left to the discretion physician or nurse – in – charge.

With respect to the Covid-19 Isolation Area, now visitors will be allowed in that area as it is only to be used to manage critical patients who have been diagnosed with Covid – 19. The KHMHA noted that the measures are guidelines and are subject to change based on the community spread of COVID-19.
