Ministry of Health implores public patience as investigations continue in San Pedro

Posted: Monday, March 23, 2020. 1:45 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health took to social media this afternoon asking for the public patience and cooperation as contact tracing activities continue on San Pedro following Belize’s first confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.

Following the announcement by Prime Minister Dean Barrow this morning, persons on the island flocked to boats and the airstrip in an attempt to leave the island, but authorities prevented them from doing so.

“We understand everyone’s concern on the island of San Pedro but please allow us to complete our investigation,” said Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services. “The situation of people rushing out to board water ferries and the airplanes attempting to leave the island places us at a higher risk. Social distancing is needed now more than ever.”

As a part of the measures to prevent the spread of the virus, the Government of Belize is pushing legislation that will impose sanctions on those who violate social distancing measures.
