By BBN Staff: A statement released today from the Belize Port Authority (BPA) says that despite the current state of emergency in place, cargo vessels will be allowed to dock and unload their cargo in San Pedro.
The BPA said that the vessels will be allowed to dock and unload under the supervision of the authorities in that area and that the procedure for birthing allocation remains the same. Captains and crews are expected to follow all health department guidelines with respect to social distancing and must remain on or near the vessel for the entirety of their time on the island.
The BPA stressed that vessels must be properly sanitized before leaving the island and ships are NOT to carry any passengers from off the island. The BPA recommended that boat owners utilize separate crews for mainland and island loading and unloading, to avoid the potential risk of spreading the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The statement follows a State of Emergency that was declared by the Government of Belize yesterday after Belize’s first positive case of COVID-19 was reported on the island.
