By BBN Staff: The Opposition, People’s United Party (PUP) has issued a statement telling the current UDP administration that there is not the time for “despicable politicking.”

The PUP says that many Belizeans have reacted with disbelief and outrage at the action of certain UDP politicians who are using the tragedy, panic and desperation caused by COVID-19 to attempt to garner political mileage.

The PUP says that it condemns those who would stoop to new lows by sending out supplies in bags branded with their names and political messages as if though, this is some sort of political cheer in the face of what can well be an unprecedented catastrophe.

“This is a time when those in leadership and those who aspire for leadership, MUST put aside all political thoughtlessness and work together to help ALL persons in need of assistance. This is no time for pettiness, no time for propagandizing, no time to sneak in a last bid for political gain, in the form of a few cans of beans packed in bright red bags emblazoned ‘Faber for Leader’, or ‘OJ for Freetown’, ‘Tracy Care Packs’ – and there are others,” the PUP noted.

The party also said that it is ashamed that after 12 years of UDP rule, the people are so impoverished that they must rely on these handouts for their survival.

“We call on all who are in the position to help those in need, to do so. In this time of crisis, our only means of survival is by standing together and doing what is right. God bless us all and God bless Belize,” the statement ended.
