Utilities pay out for COVID-19 relief

Posted: Wednesday, March 25, 2020. 3:46 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The utility companies are chipping in for the COVID-19 fight.

Belize Water Services is paying out $1 million to Government directly.

Water rates will be slashed 25 percent for the 65 percent of residential customers who consume under 3,000 gallons, extending through May.

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is handcuffed on cost of power issues and already owe a reported $60 million.

They will consider relief on a case by case basis although the Government is asking them to reconsider and has offered to take on the cost itself if possible.

Telemedia, meanwhile is providing $7 million in relief, including a direct contribution and free prepaid top-up and internet boost.
