By BBN Staff: We have seen videos of him firmly informing his nation about the measures for the Covid-19 pandemic but a video of the Salvadoran President, Nayib Bukele praying went viral on social media and has endeared him to many.

Bukele is the 38-year-old President of El Salvador who took office in 2019 and became the first president since 1984 to not to have been elected as the candidate of one of the country’s two major political parties. Bukele has been dubbed the ‘millenial president’.

He is the son of a Muslim father and a Christian mother. He is the 46th President of El Salvador and the youngest person elected as president of his country.

But, during this period, when there is uncertainty in the world due the rapid spread of coronavirus, people await measures taken by their governments to protect the well-being of themselves and their families.

When the deadly virus was coming closer to Central America, Bukele took several measures to protect the Salvadoran people even before his country had a confirmed case. With those measures, he also put in place financial assistance initiatives to assist those that would be home during this time.

Bukele halted the payments of utility bills for 3 months and the residents would now have 2 years to pay off the accrued charges.

Those bills include electricity, water, mortgages, personal loans, credit cards, telephones, cable, and internet among others.

The Bukele Government announced that it was taking steps to limit the economic impact for businesses and people affected including suspending charges for some services.

The country reported its first case of Covid-19 on Thursday, which was an imported case.

Since then, Bukele himself issued updates to his residents on his social media pages with live videos and posts regarding testing and lockdown.

Bukele’s quotes, videos, news items and posts have also been trending among Belizeans.

But included in the group of Central Americans sharing love for Bukele are Guatemalans and Hondurans.

In speaking of the pandemic affecting the entire world, he said this morning, “ We will fight to the end. No one is going to give up.”
