National parks closed under COVID-19 preventative measures

By BBN Staff: The Belize Audubon Society (BAS) announced today that as a part of the national response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries co-managed by the society have been closed for public visitation.

“We have had an overwhelming number of requests and inquiries on our opening hours following the announcement of Belize’s 1st confirmed case, which was the simultaneous date when this decision was made (March 23rd, 2020) for public health safety concerns. Though closed to the public, we remain operational for on-site management which includes surveillance and enforcement,” the BAS said.

The areas that are closed include Guanacaste National Park (GNP), St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park (SHBHNP), Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (CBWS), Victoria Peak Natural Monument (VPNM), Blue Hole Natural Monument (BHNM), Half Moon Caye Natural Monument (HMCNM), and the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary (CTWS).

The closure of these public spaces is the latest in a long list of changes that are sweeping the nation following the confirmation of Belize’s first case of COVID-19.
