By BBN Staff: A week after the Government of Belize (GOB) declared a State of Emergency (SOE) on Ambergris Caye and brought all activity on the island to a halt, the Belize Coast Guard is carrying out the only sanctioned activities on the sea around the island.

GOB declared the SOE following confirmation that two persons on the island tested positive for COVID-19. The island, once live with tourists, fishermen and locals doing recreational boating has come to a standstill leaving the men and women of the Belize Coast Guard to patrol the area and ensure that the SOE is enforced

“A fleet of enforcement vessels forms a cordon around the 25-mile long island enforcing a prohibition of sailing in support of the State of Public Emergency that was declared by Statutory Instrument # 36 of 2020. The declaration prohibits the movement of people from entering or leaving Ambergris Caye,” the Coast Guard said in an update on its web page.

The Coast Guard notes it has deployed a capable fleet to enforce the law during the SOE and to support the team from the Ministry of Health conducting mapping exercises on the island in response to the positive COVID-19 cases. The Coast Guard stressed that teams enthusiastically carry out their missions driven by a desire to serve Belize, and thanked the community of San Pedro for its support in the effort to combat the spread of the virus.

Breaking Belize News salutes the men and women of the Belize Coast Guard and thanks them for their service to the nation.
