Multiple arrests made as police enforce social distancing and other regulations

Posted: Sunday, March 29, 2020. 10:54 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has confirmed that as many as 12 persons have been arrested over the last 24 hours for contravening various provisions of the new public regulations introduced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nine persons, said Williams, have been charged with refusing to maintain social distancing. These included a pair of Bowen and Bowen workers and two gas attendants at a station in Ladyville, Belize District.

Two liquor premise owners were charged for illegally keeping their premises open.

And one person – attorney Arthur Saldivar – was charged for spreading false news.

The police will, Commissioner Williams said, continue to aggressively go after those who act in violation of the Covid19 Safety Regulations: “We once again call on our citizenry to adhere to the safety measures, to prevent the further spread of the virus in our country. It is only by us working together that we can effectively contain this virus.”

Police have sent out a reminder that under the Quarantine Emergency Measures, persons must not gather in numbers greater than ten on public and private property and maintain a social distance of no less than three feet apart (except where the persons live on the property.)

Businesses allowed to open must have the three feet distance clearly marked in front of the counter and outside were persons queue before gaining entrance into such businesses.

Offenses are punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both.
