By BBN Staff: The Public Service Union of Belize (PSU) is calling on the Government of Belize to close all non-essential Government offices countrywide and implement a temporary suitable work from home policy for those who would be able to work from home.
The PSU issued a statement today, noting that the union has received numerous requests from public officers to address the issue. The PSU also said that such measures could protect those public officers and their families, as the country continues to brace itself for the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“For those essential services, a temporary posting can be done to work from their branch residential station rather than their work jurisdiction in order to avoid public transportation, where social distancing of 10 persons or 3 feet cannot be adhered to,” the PSU said.
The union added that a shift/rotation schedule could also assist in flattening the curve which will decrease the number of persons in the office at any time and allow the continued essential government services. The PSU’s call follows confirmation of the third confirmed case of COVID-19 in Belize. Prime Minister Dean Barrow is expected to release a video update sometime this afternoon to address the
country’s way forward.
