Attorney General: State of emergency begins Wednesday night

Wednesday night sees Belize enter a national state of emergency for the first time in our independent history.

While specifics are still being finished, a curfew will be implemented from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. No one will be allowed on the street except for specific reasons, Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte said, and police can question and arrest violators both in the day and night.

Reasons are limited to buying essential goods, attending medical services or emergencies, or working in essential services.

That list includes Government workers, security workers, medical personnel, and the productive sector, among others.

Outside curfew hours, selected businesses will stay open for those working or buying. Some will be open from 5 a.m. such as bakeries, factories, and fuel stations among others, and others like banks from 7 a.m.

All other businesses not listed must remain closed.

Ports of entry remain closed, but Belizeans coming from abroad will be placed in quarantine by order of the national quarantine authority.
