By BBN Staff: As of today, over 1 million people worldwide have been infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Worldometers listed the total number of infections today as 1,004,827, with 51,528 people losing their lives to COVID-19 since the outbreak began last December.
Notably, 210,519 people who previously had the virus have recovered. When BBN first reported on the virus back in December 2019, we noted that though it was only a problem for Wu Han China, the state of global travel put the world at risk for the virus getting to other countries.
The virus has now spread to over 180 countries and territories and is having a massive impact on health systems and economies the world over. Belize is not exempt from these effects, proven by the national state of emergency which went into effect yesterday, and the myriad of businesses that have had to lay off employees or close their doors until further notice due to the virus.
