By BBN Staff: The Prime Minister of Belize has announced that the borders of Belize will be closed to all, including nationals, with effect from 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, April 4th.

Previously he had indicated that Belizeans from abroad will be allowed in and be placed on mandatory 14-day quarantine. Since that time, according to the PM, around 19 Belizeans are now confined in Corozal Town at two (2) facilities. However, Belizeans keep coming in and “the situation of Belizeans that have been in the U.S. and Mexico simply returning to the country willy nilly, cannot be allowed to continue”.

According to the Prime Minister, the National Oversight Committee unanimously supports the decision and as such the Government of Belize has decided to close our borders “even to Belizeans seeking to enter the country”.

That is unless they are returning from seeking medical attention abroad or returning from other emergency trips.

He appealed to Belizeans in the diaspora to exercise some understanding as we are now in a fight of our life.

According to the Prime Minister, “Belize must be placed on war footing.”
