Prime Minister pleads with public to adhere to emergency measures

Posted: Friday, April 3, 2020. 1:17 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Following the announcement of Belize’s fourth case of COVID-19, Prime Minister Dean Barrow released a video message announcing enhanced measures to combat the spread, and a solemn plea to Belizeans to adhere to the measures being implemented for public safety.

“I also appeal to everyone, not to try to beat the system. Stop trying, and here I pitch my petition to business owners and individuals, stop trying to find workarounds or op-outs of the
restrictions that force you to close and that limit your activities,” Barrow said.

Barrow stressed that movements must be purpose-driven and must only be for the reasons outlined by emergency measures.

“Travel across district lines is curtailed and Easter is canceled,” Barrow added.

He notes that the situation calls for heightened vigilance because the fourth case appears to be the first case of local transmission.
