Commissioner shares struggles of policing during State of Emergency

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams admits it has been an especially difficult and stressful time policing the State of Emergency.

So he does not take kindly to it when his fellow officers go out of line and make his job even harder.

His two main stressors, he says, are calls and queries from essential workers who are being stopped by police everywhere despite their status, and those who are reported to go outside their authority.

The former, he says, he can deal with: “A doctor is going to work, leave the doctor to go to work; a nurse is going to work, leave the nurse to go to work. They still stop everybody, and to some extent, I like it, because it shows they are doing what they can, and I don’t think they are doing it with bad intent. They’re trying to do their best for us to achieve our goal, but sometimes they don’t apply the discretion as best as we would want them to, so I’m not going to kill them for that.”

In such cases, it will take a simple phone call to get the worker on their way.

But the unpleasant incident he spoke about today is one that aggravates even more because it takes him into the realm of police discipline, which should be ingrained in all officers.
