By BBN Staff: Keeping with a pledge made back in March Lord Michael Ashcroft has donated $100,000 in relief funds to families in San Pedro Town that have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Lord Ashcroft COVID-19 Relief Fund sent the funds to the Hope Haven Children’s Home and Community Center (Hope Haven), which, in collaboration with the Belize Department of Human Development/Social Services, make up the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) Relief and Supplies Committee.
“Bringing the total amount of cash donations for relief in Belize to over $10,000,000BZD, Lord Ashcroft has proven that his loyalty to Belize and its people sit at a prioritized level of concern during this time of crisis,” Hope Haven said.
Hope Haven, noted that it has been providing relief supplies in the form of groceries to affected families on Ambergris Caye, as the pandemic and accompanying lockdown measures have caused significant financial strain on residents who rely heavily on tourism as their livelihood. Hope Haven as, to date, has provided relief supplies to over 1,000 families and has over 400 additional families waiting to be assessed for assistance.
“Lord Ashcroft’s donation could not have come at a better time, as the reserves and donations provided by the hundreds of benefactors have been nearly exhausted,” Hope Haven added.
The organization says that it intends to continue its work but notes that the number of families in need continues to rise, consequently so does the need for in-kind and monetary donations. Hope Haven assures that 100 percent of all donations are utilized to assist affected families and encourages doors to make donations via either PayPal at https://paypal.me/hopehavenbze or * Atlantic Bank Account #100256642 (Raise Me Up, NGO).
In March Lord Ashcroft had announced through the Belize Bank that he would make a donation of $10 million, having spent 2 weeks in Belize and seen the impact that COVID-19 had on the country.
