By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) is calling on the Government of Belize (GOB) to refrain from pressuring butane importers who have reduced their prices during the COVID-19 crisis, noting that the Belizean public needs the savings in this time of economic hardship.
The three major importers of butane in the country Belize Western Energy Limited (BWEL), Z Gas, and Gas Tomza, issued a joint statement today noting the GOB, through the Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS), threatened to confiscate their equipment or even imprison the principals of the companies over the reduced butane prices.
“This move by the Barrow administration defies logic. We realize that there are political ramifications because the government is desperately trying to protect its yet unrealized national gas company. Most Belizeans know that Government has legislated for these butane entities to be unable to sell butane cheap because that would affect the bottom line of the national gas company when it comes into being,” the PUP said.
The party stressed that the few dollars in savings being offered by the companies could literally be the difference between a family eating or not and demanded that GOB relax its hold on the industry and allow the importers to offer what relief they can to Belizeans as the country continues to reel economically from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We MUST look out for them first before we look to cater to special interests. We expect the Government to come to its senses where butane is concerned, and to act accordingly,” the PUP added.
