Taiwan comes through with $2 million more for COVID-19

Posted: Thursday, April 9, 2020. 6:51 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Republic of China (Taiwan), through its “Regional Emergency Fund against the COVID-19 Pandemic” under the Central American Integration System (SICA)-Taiwan Framework Agreement provided Belize with a further two million dollars for urgent additional equipment needs for the COVID-19 fight.

The donation was presented virtually by Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize Remus Li-Kuo Chen on behalf of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and accepted by Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Secretary General of SICA, H.E. Vinicio Cerezo.

The funds will be used to get additional personal protective equipment, medical equipment, testing kits, and laboratory supplies for frontline medical service providers countrywide.

As long-time friends for more than 30 years, and in recognition of how Taiwan has demonstrated to the world its success and strength in limiting the impact of COVID-19, Belize continues to advocate for Taiwan’s inclusion and participation in the World Health Organization and its annual World Health Assembly, especially as countries improve responses to COVID-19 and global public health planning.

SICA, says Cerezo, also has a firm commitment to assist Belize and other Central American countries through regional cooperation against the deadly virus.
