KHMH staff being screened following the death of Patient #10

Posted: Saturday, April 11, 2020. 9:28 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Staffers from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital’s (KHMH)’s Accident and Emergency Unit (A&E) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are being swabbed for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus strain that causes COVID-19, following the death of Belize’s Patient #10.

The KHMH issued a statement yesterday saying that a mapping exercise is being conducted to locate staffers that came in direct contact with the patient and that they will be tested and quarantined. The hospital authority noted that the staffers that dealt with the patient did
utilize some level of personal protective equipment (PPE) while dealing with the patient.

“The KHMHA reassures the public and staff that we will do our very best to maintain the integrity of our facility and continue to safeguard the protection of all users of our services,” the hospital authority said.

The KHMHA asked that staffers who believed they might have been exposed to contact the Hospital Epidemiologist, Dr. Selma Bermudez, at Ext. 280.

The KHMHA said that the patient, now deceased, was transferred from a private healthcare facility on April 7, initially testing negative for SARS-CoV-2. He tested positive during a restest on April 9 and was managed briefly in the A&E before being transferred to the ICU where
he was managed in a single enclosed room.
