PUP to consider leaving Oversight and bipartisan committees

Posted: Saturday, April 11, 2020. 3:44 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Tired of, they say, being ignored by the powers that be, the Opposition People’s United Party is considering pulling out of the various committees on which they were invited to serve in the fight against COVID-19.

According to Opposition Leader John Briceño, their representative on the Unemployment Relief Program approved some 10 thousand applications, many from among the most vulnerable. The Government representative has approved barely a tenth of that figure, at 1,500, which Briceno called “a callous disregard for the humanitarian need of our suffering people.”

“When I accepted to co-chair the Oversight Committee on this crisis, it was in the genuine interest of bipartisan support for the country’s management of this national challenge. It is becoming more evident that politics is finding its way into the decisions of the Government, and this cannot be supported,” Briceño said, adding that he would be consulting through this weekend on whether to continue.

Earlier, Briceño said the Opposition “has been working tirelessly in good faith as part of health, agriculture and economic committees. We are dissatisfied with many decisions, as we do not believe that our suggestions based on the advice of experts are being taken seriously at these levels of the process.”

That their input has been ignored, he concluded, is “regrettable.” The public must have trust in the systems established to manage this crisis. As a responsible Opposition, we demand transparency and corrective actions now, he concluded.
