BREAKING: Three New Cases of COVID-19 Identified in Belize

Posted: Saturday, April 11, 2020. 10:06 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health, in a release a short while ago, reported that three (3) more cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Belize. These cases were identified as part of the initial mapping exercise in Belize City and the processing of further samples from the case in Corozal.

The Ministry noted that two (2) of the new cases are in Corozal and one (1) is in Belize City; all these cases are close contacts of already identified cases.

These cases were swabbed as part of the mapping exercises, and all were asymptomatic and are in self-isolation at home.

Thus far, results for front line workers from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, and those at the Belize Health Care Partners Limited, are negative for COVID-19. However, there are test results still pending and a second test will have to be conducted on those individuals that tested negative in order to confirm that they remain negative.

According to the Ministry, it continues with its enhanced surveillance activities and mapping exercises as it aims to contain further cases of COVID-19.

The press release encouraged the public “to continue practicing social distancing, avoid being in public spaces unless it is absolutely necessary, and when doing so, practice proper hygiene”.

The total number of positive cases in Belize has now increased from 10 to 13, and the country has recorded 2 deaths to date. It is also now clear that community spread is occurring in at least three (3) districts in Belize, namely Cayo, Belize and Corozal districts.
