Treatment on the way for COVID-19?

Posted: Saturday, April 11, 2020. 9:23 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Finally there is some good news to report in the combat of COVID-19.

According to Reuters, the application of remdesivir, an experimental drug developed by Gilead Sciences Inc has resulted in the recovery of two-thirds of severely ill COVID-19 patients.

Yesterday this finding was published by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Observations for the published report were made on patients in the United States, Europe, Canada and Japan who received a 10-day course of intravenous remdesivir.

According to the author of the analysis, these results are nothing less than “hopeful” but advised there were some limitations as the sample size was small, there was no control group to compare with, the details disclosed limited, and the follow-up time was short.

Across the world and in Belize we are growing anxious for a treatment to repel this pandemic and return some normalcy in our daily lives. However, since the trial has many limitations, it cannot yet be confirmed if remdesivir will eventually become a drug that can be used to effectively treat COVID-19.

COVID-19 has already killed more than 100,000 persons worldwide and has collapsed the global economy.
