Belize Water Services and Town Council partner to assist San Ignacio/Santa Elena residents affected by water shortage

Posted: Tuesday, April 14, 2020. 8:02 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Belize Water Services Limited (BWSL) issued a statement apologizing to customers in the San Ignacio/Santa Elena area who are experiencing low water pressure or water shortages.

The customers most affected are those living in areas of higher elevation, particularly the Santa Cruz and Cristo Rey Road areas of Santa Elena.

BWSL claims that the challenge to the water supply system is due to the continued dry season, which has adversely affected a supply well for the area, and the current severe heat wave.

According to BWSL, “while the water system  can usually supply the area adequately, the weather conditions has led to customers increasing their water usage significantly and, with those in the lower elevations drawing more heavily on the system, those at higher elevations are left with very low pressure or without water”.

In order to directly assist those who are most affected, BWSL has coordinated efforts with the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Council, to truck water to customers in the affected areas.

The water delivery truck will commence on April 14 2020, at 7:00 a.m. and delivery will commence in the Santa Cruz area.

To further assist with this challenge, BWSL is asking the assistance of all customers, but especially the majority of San Ignacio/Santa Elena customers who are receiving adequate pressure, to kindly conserve water.

Customers are asked to refrain from using water for non-essential purposes such as the washing of vehicles, watering gardens or streets, re-filling pools etc.

Given the unique health and sanitation requirements for everyone due to COVID-19, BWSL is asking customers to kindly cooperate with this conservation request.

BWSL says that it has an ongoing project to improve the overall supply system for this area. This project includes the construction of a new pump station and installation of new mains in these areas of Santa Elena. Unfortunately, this project component has been delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The release ends by BWSL apologizing for any inconvenience the interruption is causing to customers in the San Ignacio/Santa Elena area.
