Mental Health Association saddened by actions of police officers

Posted: Wednesday, April 15, 2020. 8:41 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Mental Health Association issued a statement today condemning the incident that led to the circulation of a perverted video in which two individuals are instructed to perform sexual acts by unidentified persons.

The Mental health association says that one of the victims lives with a severe mental disorder but this in no way diminishes their right to be treated with dignity and respect.

“The Mental Health Association is especially saddened that the perpetrators were police officers who are charged with safeguarding the lives of ALL Belizeans but abused their position of authority.  The fact that these officers felt comfortable enough to record and share this video indicates the level of stigma and discrimination towards vulnerable persons that exists within our society,” the association expressed.

The association says that it supports the call by the Ministry of Health for appropriate and proportionate punishment to be levied against these officers.

In addition, the association says that anyone circulating this video shares in the guilt of the perpetrators by further violating the victims.

The public is reminded that a culture of stigma, discrimination and victimization of vulnerable persons makes the lives of these persons and their families even more difficult and discourages people from seeking help when it is needed.

The public is urged to show sensitivity to those who are particularly vulnerable and in need of support and compassion.

The Mental Health Association encourages all Belizeans to work together to reflect the best in our society.
