Ministry of Health mandates suspension of private practice for public health workers

Posted: Thursday, April 16, 2020. 12:32 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health has issued a memo requiring all public health staff to cease the delivery of private practice services to aid in the national COVID-19 response.

The memo, signed by Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero, said that the decision to suspend private practice services was taken as a result of recent developments with the national COVID-19 and after consultation with managers of the four health regions countrywide. The memo noted that the Commission of Private Practice Services adds additional exposure to public health staff.

“Any exposure to COVID-19 in the private sector that warrants that any health staff be placed under quarantine cannot be a cost borne by he public sector and as such the adequate measures as per PSR (Public Service Regulations) would be taken if this should happen to any healthcare staff,” the Ministry said.

The MOH stressed in a followup message that the memo does not apply to anyone outside of the public sector.

“The sole content of the memo is to decrease exposure of staff to COVID-19, so that by decreasing exposure in the private sector, we are seeking to have a full cadre of staff responsive to the demands of the public sector,” the Ministry added.

The Ministry also said that the memo applies to public officers who are permanently established in the public sector and  further noted that these officers do get a ‘non-private practice’ allowance.
