By Aaron Humes: Yes, Stann Creek has bananas – lots of them.
And those which aren’t being exported are being distributed to residents by the district’s area representatives, Rodwell Ferguson and Frank “Pawpa” Mena.
Writing on social media, Ferguson, of the Opposition People’s United Party, says he has been up early all week collecting green bananas – not perishable – from farms and transporting them at his own cost to the many villages in his constituency of Stann Creek West.
Ferguson defended himself against critics, saying that he is using his best judgment and that while everyone will not be satisfied, he is doing all he can while remaining honest and humble.
So too is Mena who spoke to PLUS TV’S Geovannie Brackett in Dangriga on Thursday, the first day of Government’s food assistance program.
Like the established pantry program you must sign up (the $12 fee is now waived) but he insists there is no discrimination, political or otherwise.
“The rain di fall and ih noh di fall pah one man house, ih di fall pah all a we,” Mena explained.
In his case he is getting the bananas, along with other basic goods, to residents using the food distribution programme via the Ministry of Human Development.
Ferguson meanwhile called on Government to encourage backyard gardens for growing vegetables and fruits for personal and household use.
