Dry weather sparks spate of bush fires in Vaca Forest Reserve

Posted: Tuesday, April 21, 2020. 9:59 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Every evening in Western Belize, residents experience smokey atmosphere due to bush fires in several communities. Residents have expressed their concerns to the relevant authorities but continue to call for enforcement of regulations regarding fires.

This morning, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) informed that the Vaca Forest Reserve is on fire.

FCD says that they will continue to educate farmers but urge that law enforcement is necessary to cease the bon fires.

The Department of the Environment continues to warn the public about buring especially now, during the dry season.

The Forest Department is urgently calling on the public, especially land developers, farmers and local communities to cease burning at this time.

The Forest Department also reminds the public that a permit is required for any agricultural burning.

Failure to provide evidence of this to the police can lead to arrest and prosecution.

The Forest Department will not be issuing any burning permits until further notice.
