By BBN Staff: Environmental organizations and the people that support them all over the world are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual event in support of a healthy planet and raising awareness about the practices that make it possible.

Earth Day 2020 is being celebrated globally under the theme  “Climate Action,” a nod to the efforts globally raising awareness about the harmful effects of Climate Change and the need to address it before global temperatures reach to a point where interventions will be irrelevant.

The event started in the United States back in 1970, when 10 percent of the population banned together to express their outrage about the harm that bad environmental practices were having on the planet. Oil spills, air pollution, and deforestation were just some of the things that led the people to mark the day and raise awareness about the importance of saving the planet from the effects of pollution.

Earth Day 2020 is even being observed in Belize where companies (like SMART) and NGO’s (such as the Steadfast Tourism and Conservation Association – STACA) have taken the time to issue statements of well wishes on the occasion. STACA noted that while the theme is focused on climate change, planet Earth is also facing a difficult time at the moment in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak and offered its thoughts and prayers to Belize and everywhere else affected by the virus.

“Above all, we call on all people, during these difficult times, to live as people of hope; that the threat we all face can be overcome, and that we will emerge stronger, more resilient, and wiser from the experience,” STACA said.

Earth Day 2020 comes at a challenging time for Belize environmentally. The theme has never been more relevant to the country as it comes at a time where the country is plagued by an extended drought, spontaneous bush fires from the consistent heat and mass erosion in many coastal communities due to rising sea levels; all the effects of Climate Change.
