Dr. Manzanero says ‘More tests for exposed health workers’ in COVID-19 Update

Posted: Thursday, April 23, 2020. 9:53 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: While Belizeans are comforted by the news of the easing of restrictions starting this weekend, the Ministry of Health is bracing for stepped up testing for those on the frontline of the COVID-19 fight.

The office of the Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, announced tonight that 65 persons are “under investigation” pending tests this weekend.

These are mainly exposed health care workers who are going to be tested after the 14 day exposure.

Dr. Manzanero explains: “Exposed staff would routinely be re-swabbed at day 14 or if they become symptomatic prior to the 14 days; to date all exposed staff tested have been negative.”

“We also need to bear in mind that this weekend will represent the 14 day time period since the last identified cases so that we can anticipate a higher number of tests from Saturday through to Monday.”

Belize is aiming to keep its streak of days without confirmed cases going to 11. A total of 28 days are needed before major restrictions can be eased, but in any event the State of Emergency will be extended following next week’s pro forma vote to the end of June.
