John Saldivar applauds COVID-19 efforts and shares ideas on economic recovery

Posted: Thursday, April 23, 2020. 11:39 am CST.

By BBN Staff: UDP Belmopan Area Representative, John Saldivar, took to social media today to commend the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and the Oversight Committee for steering the country with “great dexterity.”

According to Saldivar, “We have done well.”

But he cautioned that we are not out of the woods just yet and must not drop our guards.

According to Saldivar, we must now think about economic recovery.

“Many of the jobs lost to COVID-19 are lost forever,” he said adding that there must be a transition to replace those jobs.

He explained that new industries need to be added and that COVID-resilient industries need to be expanded.

“The twenty-five thousand who lost their jobs in the tourism industry cannot wait for eighteen months for that industry to recover,” he said.

According to Saldivar, we must get tourism going as soon as possible but that depends on how quickly other economies open.

He explained that some of those jobs in the tourism industry need to transition into other sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing and business process outsourcing.

Saldivar concluded that there are other viable industries but there must be coordination from the private and public sectors of which he hopes a Economic Recovery Council can be commissioned.
