Nationwide blackout caused by damaged transmission structure in Orange Walk

Posted: Thursday, April 23, 2020. 2:10 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belizeans countrywide – except for the island of Caye Caulker which is not connected to the national grid – are anxiously awaiting restoration of electricity after a power outage around 1 a.m. this morning.

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) just confirmed it has sent crews to repair a damaged transmission structure in the village of San Estevan, just outside Orange Walk Town.

BEL says restoration to certain parts of the country will commence shortly. As an essential service they are exempt from arrest under the ongoing State of Emergency regulations.

BEL has committed to keeping the lights on during the current emergency except for situations out of its control like this one.
