By BBN Staff: Last May Belizeans voted to have Guatemala’s unfounded claim to Belizean territory adjudicated before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Following those results, the ICJ granted Guatemala until May 2020 to submit its arguments, and Belize would have a year to respond.
Well, Guatemala won’t submit its argument as scheduled as it has requested a one-year extension from the ICJ.
According to the Guatemalan government, as a result of COVID-19, it had to delay its preparations for the case.
The Government of Belize reportedly objected to that, requesting and instead suggesting that two months was sufficient for Guatemala to prepare its case.
Nevertheless, the ICJ offered Guatemala a 6-month extension.
And so Guatemala will have until December to submit its arguments.
Belize will also benefit from that 6-month extension and will now have a year and a half before responding.
