Belize City Animal Aid distributes over 800 pounds of food to animal owners

Posted: Saturday, April 25, 2020. 9:34 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Belize City Animal Aid, in the midst of the hardships brought on by COVID-19, began an intiative to distribute over 800 pounds of dog and cat food to animal owners feeling the economic pinch during the pandemic.

Our newsroom spoke with Diandra Peralta, President Belize City Animal Aid (formerly the Belize City Humane Society), who explained that her organization managed to distribute some 872 pounds of animal food to some 25 households which had two animals or more, and six individuals who conduct animal rescue activities in their communities.

“We know that during this time people are not eating themselves and a lot of those people have animals and we thought that ‘If people can’t eat, what’s happening to their animals?’”

Peralta noted that other humane societies across the country, which are run entirely by volunteers, have also conducted similar efforts in their respective communities. The Belize City Animal Aid, in this instance, had to bear almost the entire cost of the initiative but received supported by Serendib Imports where the food was purchased, a Belizean in Canada who made a monetary donation and Antoinette and James Wolverson who donated food. She added that the humane societies are hoping to continue supporting animal lovers and their pets.

Those wishing to support the efforts of the humane societies can contact Belize Animal Aid through their Facebook page, [email protected].
