By BBN Staff: Muslims in Belize and across the world are celebrating Ramadan, which commenced on Thursday and will last for a month.
For religious context, Ramadan is the month in which Allah contacted the prophet, Mohammed, to give him the verses of the holy book, or Qu’ran in the Islamic religion.
Stephen Gabb, a missionary of the Ahmadiyyah Muslim Community in Belize City today spoke to BBN on this important period.
He explained, “Ramadan is the month of fasting for Muslims worldwide. It is done in the 9th month of the islamic or lunar calendar. It occurs at different times each year.”
“It is an obligation for every healthy Muslim to fast in this month because it is one of the 5 pillars of Islam, ” he added.
During this period from sunrise to sunset Muslims cannot eat, drink or engage in sexual activity.
According to Gabb in the night after the sun has set there is usually a feast but that has been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He explained, “Well as a community we usually pray and break the fast together in the night. We call it the iftar dinner where we even invite outsiders to eat with us, but this year because of the pandemic this can’t be done.”
Fortunately, the Ahmadiyyah Muslim Community will use technology to maintain their unity.
“This year we will do Facebook lives to educate the public on Islam and to stay connected with our members. At the end of Ramadan there is Eid ul Fitr which is a festival of celebration in completion of the month. Where we pray together and share gifts together. Throughout the month we increase in charity because the Prophet Muhammad (saw) did the same in his lifetime.”
Speaking of charity, the group recently made donations of pantry to those in most urgent need in Belize City, Belmopan and surrounding villages.
