Volunteers assist in effort to mitigate fires in Vaca Forest

Posted: Saturday, April 25, 2020. 4:49 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Earlier today, BBN reported on continuing fires in the Vaca Forest.

In a statement issued by Friends for Conservation and Development earlier in the week, they informed of multiple forest fires in the Maya mountains of the Vaca Plateau forest.

Jungle Splash Eco-Tours had reached out to the public via their social media pages requesting assistance to mitigate the many fires in the Vaca Forest.

Groups of volunteers from Santa Elena and Benque Viejo del Carmen responded to the call and assisted in trying to out the forest fires in the Vaca forest.

Personnel from the fire department also responded to the Vaca Forest in an effort to assist residents.

FCD and the Department of the Environment continue to urge the public to cease burning.

FCD has made several recommendations to the government to assist with the fires including instituting a Binational Forest Fire Prevention Taskforce and heavier fines for people caught burning.
