World Malaria Day commemorated

Posted: Saturday, April 25, 2020. 2:22 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: April 24 was celebrated around the world as World Malaria Day.

The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Zero malaria starts with me.”

The World Health Organization noted that malaria still kills a child every 2  minutes and no child should die because they cannot access life-saving services to prevent, detect and treat the disease.

Belize continues to work with health officials with a focus of Malaria elimination by this year and certification by 2022.

Earlier this year, the Minister of Health received vehicles for support program for the Regional Malaria Elimination Project and the 11th EDF Project.

The objective of the project is to strengthen the Malaria Elimination Implementation Strategy and to improve the Belize Health Information System.

PAHO Caribbean noted that as of October 2019, Belize had ZERO local cases of malaria.

Belize is one of 6 countries from the Americas with the potential to eliminate malaria by the end of this year.
