More State of Emergency arrests, one for illegal burning of garbage

Posted: Sunday, April 26, 2020. 9:31 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department arrested 59 people yesterday for violating the regulations under the current State of Emergency(SOE).

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams issued the update this morning, noting that 45 people were arrested for “Unable to provide reasons for movement outside of curfew period,” 13 people arrested for “Breach of curfew,” one person for “Operating public transportation for hire during public emergency,” and one person for “Negligent use of fire,” under the provisions of Statutory Instrument no.59 Environmental Protection (Prohibition of the open burning of Refuse and other Combustible matter).

The Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, and Sustainable Development announced the passage of SI no. 59 on April 21, as a means of combatting the environmental and health concerns associated with the open burning of yard waste.

“During the state of emergency, anyone engaging in open burning on any private or public land is liable to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment not exceeding two years,” the Ministry said.

True to the Commissioner’s word, police have remained consistent in arresting SOE violators, as a means of emphasizing the national importance of abiding by the regulations.
