By Aaron Humes: The seven parliamentarians in whose hands the State of Emergency lies are debating the proposed 60-day extension inside the House of Representatives in a closed door session.
After Prime Minister Dean Barrow introduced the motion, Leader of the Opposition Johnny Briceno outlined some of what his supporters are asking for, including a formal COVID-19 Act to guide the economic recovery.
And deputy Cordel Hyde called on Government to “stop playing games” with the ongoing assistance plans including the Food Pantry, Food Assistance, BOOST, and Unemployment Relief Program. Many of those who applied, he said, have been denied or delayed, and were saved by relatives who sent money from the U.S.
Hyde also called for Belizeans to “appreciate the struggle” and use this time of lockdown to bond with our families and de-stress. All that we currently miss, he assured, will be there on the other side.
Speaking for the Government, Mesopotamia’s Michael Finnegan praised his administration’s efforts and said it was necessary to keep it going.
