Emergency provisions approved; media allowed to observe

Posted: Monday, April 27, 2020. 2:10 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: After a delay of 45 minutes, members of the press were finally allowed access inside the National Assembly for what turned out to be three hours of debate on the 60-day extension of the State of Emergency regulations.

These were approved early this afternoon and go to ratification by the Senate tomorrow, Tuesday.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow has no direct control of Assembly procedures – that is reserved for Speaker of the House Laura Longsworth and clerk Eddie Webster. But he lent support to the press being allowed to observe subject to social distancing rules.

The debate proved tougher going as the Opposition provided their views on the state of affairs with some gusto.

Tomorrow’s Senate meeting proceeds with a quorum of four Senators – Leader of Government Business Godwin Hulse; Leader of Opposition Business Michel Chebat; Government Senator, Attorney General and Minister of National Security Michael Peyrefitte and Senator for Trade Unions and Civil Society Elena Smith, plus President Darrell Bradley.

We will have more from the Prime Minister and Minister of Health Pablo Marin later on.
