Julius Espat: ‘Belize doesn’t really need SOE’

Posted: Monday, April 27, 2020. 11:20 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The People’s United Party is on record as approving an extension of the current state of emergency for 30 days.

But does Belize really need a State of Emergency?

Not according to Cayo South area rep Julius Espat, who says legislation could have been passed without resorting to a State of Emergency which limits Belizeans’ challenges to the state on the issue of liberty.

Espat says Belizeans need not only be healthy, but also comfortable, safe and secure, not fearful and helpless.

This means Government must guarantee access to food and clean water – some villages in his constituency, Espat said, still don’t have any.

To pursue the extension without addressing these, Espat said, is negligent in itself, but it is compounded by the introduction of politics.

Espat claimed that information gathered from registration for the ongoing programs is being filtered back to party officials, though people do not want to talk publicly.

What people want, he said, is food, not money, and not from political sources but through nongovernmental organizations such as the Red Cross and village and community leaders to ensure proper and equitable distribution.

Espat questions why the National Emergency Management Organization has not been used as is its purpose.
