By Aaron Humes: Our colleagues at PGTV confirmed to BBN tonight that a bush fire near the remote village of Crique Jute, Toledo District, has claimed at least one house and burnt many farmland and cacao plantations.
Earlier today the volunteers were fighting the fire which was affecting a number of cacao farms in the area. The fire was brought under control but due to the strong gust of evening wind the fire picked up and began threatening a number of homes in the village.
Our reports suggest the fire got out of control as a result of burning of milpa farmlands which has been restricted by Department of the Environment (DOE).
Crique Jute village is located about 23 miles from Punta Gorda town. Both the fire service and police are en route to the village to assess the situation and protect the homes of the villagers.
