By BBN Staff: With the disruption that COVID-19 has caused on everyday life and the resulting strain on the mental health of students, the Ministry of Education says that school counselors are playing an integral role in the continued education efforts being rolled out for students.

The Ministry’s Deputy Chief Education Officer at the Ministry of Education, Dr. Neulin Villanueva, said today that, particularly at the secondary school level, schools were asked to include some form of psychosocial support for students, which would be spearheaded by the counselors.

“Instead of just getting content on Math or English or Science, some of the sessions that the high school students would be getting would be on psychosocial,” Villanueva said.

She noted that some schools have even provided hotlines to call for counseling services and counselors have also been involved in the production of the Learners Link publication produced for high schoolers, and have added life skills activities for the students. The Ministry’s radio broadcasts 1will also include content on wellness and life skills in an effort to address the socioemotional development of students.
