Chinese community makes food assistance donation to Belize City Council

Posted: Thursday, April 30, 2020. 3:59 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the All China Federation of Overseas Taishanese made a donation of food items and other perishables valued at around $100,000 to the Belize City Council to assist with relief efforts as the country battles with the economic effects of COVID-19.

The Federation made the donation this morning at Vin Hong Whole Sale on Euphrates Avenue, with Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner receiving it on behalf of the council.

Wallace Zhu, secretary of the Federation, explained that the donation forms a part of a larger effort by the Chinese community in Belize, with the hope of making donations countrywide.

“We know that there are many families affected by COVID-19, people have lost their jobs and their income, so we decided to give a helping hand,” Zhu said. “Overall we have collected over a half-million dollars worth of food. Hopefully, further down we can collect more and do more for people.”

Zhu noted that the Chinese community have not been exempt from the economic downturn of COVID-19, noting that the loss of jobs and income by Belizeans has meant fewer people buying at shops countrywide.

Mayor Wagner said that the council intends to start packaging off the items, which include rice, beans flour, canned sausage, toilet paper, and an assortment of other items, for distribution early next week.

“We’re just hoping that our residents have conscience on their fellow residents as well and if you know that you received and you have two pantry in your household already and your neighbour doesn’t have then conscience has to prevail. We can’t police who gets and who doesn’t get but we try to get the neediest of the needy at all times,” Wagner said.
