Debunking misinformation amidst COVID-19 pandemic

Posted: Friday, May 1, 2020. 3:23 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In March, Belize’s Attorney General informed that legislation was set in place to hold people accountable for creating and sharing fake news and creating panic during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Government considered it necessary since as the virus was spreading worldwide, many people on social media began sharing misinformation relating to suspected patients in Belize and the work of the Ministry of Health.

Whether the purpose is for political mischief, tainting someone’s reputation, fear-mongering or plain virality of misinformation, we all have come across a ‘Fake News’ post during our digital lives.

Local news has never been more important than it is today, while the world is experiencing a pandemic and as such, everyone wants to have access to correct, real-time and accurate information.

But, how do you verify and determine if what you received on Whatsapp, on your news feed, or inbox is real or fake?

Earlier this year, I shared with you tips to recognize fake posts as the general elections drew near. It is undoubtedly obvious that campaigners and political agents use social media to push their campaigns and agendas. However, sharing a misleading or false post can cause a great deal of trouble.

Most recently, we have noticed the manufacturing of a duplicate news page of one of Belize’s largest TV stations, News 5 Live. The page continues to be used for the furtherance of obvious political agenda. The official news page has issued statements denouncing the misleading posts on the fake page but the page continues to grow and share fake news daily.

Іn thіѕ іnѕtаnсе, check the official News 5 page. The fake News 5 live page has a small number of likes and follows. Notably, the fake page has used the exact same picture of the official page.

In addition, the fake page was created in February of 2020 while the real page exists from December 2013 and has listed its website and other information.

Many other countries have created their own fact checking websites on which, journalists and other media professionals keep the public up to date with fact checking resources. Our neighbor Mexico uses Verificado and the United States has Snopes and Fact Check.

The Poynter Institute has created the #CoronaVirusFacts Alliance where the public can fact check coronavirus information being shared in their countries using the fact check agency in their own country.

Information can be found on over 70 countries in over 40 languages, the massive crowdsourcing project was made possible through members of the fact check agencies via spreadsheet and messaging apps. The CoronaVirusFacts Alliance is the largest collaborative project ever launched in the fact-checking world.

“During a pandemic, combating mis/disinformation is crucial to public health. Just like the virus itself, rumors and falsehoods flow over borders, causing what is now called a universal infodemic. Our international collaboration is essential in this battle. The database of falsehoods is now the best source an individual can access when questioning information about the novel coronavirus,” Poynter.
