Belizeans returning from Mexico through northern border arrested for breaking State of Emergency regulations

Posted: Saturday, May 2, 2020. 6:00 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Earlier today social media went abuzz with footage of Belizeans detained at the northern border.

It appears that a group had gone into Chetumal to purchase groceries and other items but were detained upon return back into the country.

Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, today shared that the group will be charged and placed under mandatory quarantine.

Only days ago the Government of Belize issued a Statutory Instrument (SI) indicating that all ports of entry into and out of Belize was closed.

According to that SI, any person found in contravention would be committing an offence and face the possibility of mandatory quarantine and three months in prison.

Quintana Roo, the Mexican state in which Chetumal is situated has recorded around 800 cases of COVID-19 and so travel to that municipality can expose Belizeans to the virus.
