Over 60 people arrested for State of Emergency violations- more than 10 arrested for not wearing masks

By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department arrested 62 people yesterday for violating the State of Emergency (SOE) Regulations.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said today that 27 people were arrested for “Breach of curfew,” 15 people were arrested for “Failure to wear a cloth mask or other face (mouth) covering whilst in public,” nine people were arrested for “Unable to provide a reasonable explanation for movement outside of curfew,” five people arrested for “Cross-district movement,” two for “Failing to practice social distancing,” two business owners were arrested for ” Kept business establishment open when required to be closed,” and two people were arrested for “Entering Belize illegally.”

“In addition, 1 person was summoned for unable to provide a reasonable explanation for movement outside of curfew,” Williams said.

Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte warned on April 30, that once Statutory Instrument no.65 came into effect on May 1, anyone in a public space who is not wearing a mask would be committing an offense.
